Travel Tips
Keep these in mind when planning your trip!
-
Italy uses the Euro (€). Credit cards are widely accepted, but keep small cash for taxis, markets, and cafes.
-
Service is included in restaurant bills. Rounding up a euro or two is appreciated but not expected. Do not tip 18-20% as is the custom in the U.S.
-
Outlets are Type C, F, and L; bring a universal adapter (220V) and a power converter if your devices are not dual-voltage.
-
Most U.S. steamers, curling irons, and hair dryers won’t work without a voltage converter—opt for travel-sized European versions. For beauty and spa services, see here.
-
Trains are efficient for city-to-city travel. In smaller towns, plan for taxis or private drivers.
-
English is common in tourist areas, but learning a few Italian phrases goes a long way in courtesy and experience.
-
Churches require covered shoulders and knees. Pack a shawl or scarf for easy access if you plan to visit.
-
Tap water is safe to drink in most cities, and many piazzas have public fountains with fresh, free water.
-
Meals are leisurely and meant for connection. Don’t expect quick service, and note that dinner often begins after 8:00 PM. See our reccommendations here.
-
Many attractions require advance online booking (Vatican, Uffizi, Colosseum)—reserve early online to avoid long waits.
